Choosing raid block size mac

It is presenting a group of disks and making them look like a single disk to your computer. The advantage is that instead of a single disk's performance, you now have the performance of several disks.

If you use fast 15k drives you might reach , 1, or more IOPS. And instead of 1. If you have a cache that you are in a hurry to empty, a nice fast stripe set is very helpful.

RAID chunk size the key to RAID striping performance

If they all jam up on one disk your costly storage system will be no faster than a single disk. That's where chunk size comes in. But how big are the pieces of the stripe on each disk?

The pieces a stripe is broken into are called chunks. Is the stripe broken into 1k byte pieces? Or 1 MB pieces? Or even larger? To get good performance you must have a reasonable chunk size. So what is a reasonable chunk size? Do you do video editing or a lot of Photoshop work? Then your average request size will be large and your performance will be dominated by how long it takes to get the data to or from the disks.

So you want a lot of bandwidth to move data quickly.

To get a lot of bandwidth you want each disk to shoulder part of the load, so you want a small chunk size. What is small? Anywhere from bytes one block to 8 KB. So you want a large chunk size - at least 64 KB or more. In that case you need to know what the database is actually doing to choose the right chunk size. You should take the time to understand what your workload is in order to configure a RAID system for good performance.

If you're using solid state drives for your RAID, you should not use the zero out option as this can cause premature wear and reduce the lifetime of an SSD. Now that we have erased the drives we will use for the RAID 0 striped set, we're ready to start building the striped set. The total capacity of the RAID 0 striped set you create will be equal to the combined total space offered by all members of the set, minus some overhead for the RAID boot files and data structure. Once again: the speed provided by a RAID 0 striped set does not come free.

It is a tradeoff between performance and data reliability. In this case, we have skewed the equation towards the performance end of the spectrum. The result is that we can be adversely affected by the combined failure rate of all of the drives in the set. Remember, any single drive failure will cause all data on the RAID 0 striped set to be lost.

In order to be prepared for a drive failure, we need to ensure that we not only have backed up the data but that we also have a backup strategy that goes beyond the occasional backup.

Instead, consider the use of backup software that runs on a predetermined schedule. The above warning doesn't mean that a RAID 0 striped set is a bad idea. Once you create a RAID 0 striped set, you won't have any reason to complain about how slow your hard drives are. Share Pin Email.
